A Lifestyle Guide for San Pedro, California
Hands-On Revitalization
A Streetcorner Transformed: 8th Street and Pacific Avenue
Goes From Swap Meet to Urban Lifestyle Hub
San Pedro, Calif., December 22, 2006 -- It was a picture-perfect day under the Southern
California sun. Two local developers were in the highest of spirits following the ribbon-cutting
ceremony for their new lifestyle enterprise, Caffé Port Town. As guests sampled espresso and
"Euro cookies" inside, businessmen Ralph Galante and Dean Thomas reached for the clear
blue sky. Ascending to the building's second floor in a cherry picker, the men personally
removed the final remnants of the unglamourous past, a gritty swap meet that once
operated on the ground floor. Brimming with blue-sky idealism, the San Pedro daredevils
transformed their investment from ugly duckling to graceful swan.
Spring, 2008 update -- The coffeehouse and café are temporarily
closed. Dean and Jan Thomas, now the full owners, are securing the
proper permits and bringing the establishment into full compliance
with health and fire regulations. Read the full story at San Pedro
